Moxibustion works by stimulating specific acupuncture points or other targeted areas on the body with the heat from moxa, which is typically in the form of cones or sticks made from dried mugwort leaves. The primary functions of moxibustion include warming the meridians to expel cold, enhancing the smooth flow of Qi and blood, strengthening Yang energy, reducing abscesses, dissolving nodules, and preventing illness.
One convenient form of moxibustion is the use of sticky moxa cones, which can be applied to areas such as the hands, feet, or other points on the body. These cones have adhesive backing, making them easy to use. After lighting the cones, which produce a small amount of smoke, they can be placed on the treatment points with tweezers. If the cones become too hot for the patient, they can be removed or repositioned for comfort.
To remove the cones, simply use a tray to hold them in place and use larger tweezers to carefully lift them off the skin.
The benefits are numerous, particularly for conditions related to cold or stagnation of Qi (energy flow), such as joint pain, digestive issues, and menstrual irregularities. The warming effect helps to stimulate circulation, expel cold, and improve the overall flow of energy throughout the body.
It’s interesting how the moxa cones can be moved around if they get too hot. This method gives flexibility during treatment to ensure the comfort of the patient while still providing the therapeutic heat needed for healing.
